Michael Hastings-We’re Not in Kansas Anymore! Pt. 3-Revised
When I first heard about the Michael Hastings crash , I remember getting that creeped out feeling that I get sometimes, times when I immediately know that something is not right with a story…solar plexus tom-toms.
My serenity was being assaulted once again, nerves torn asunder. I hadn’t yet quite recovered from Sandy Hook and the Boston Bombings, yet here it came again. Incoming B.S.-duck and cover. And since this one was in my backyard, I finally had a little home court advantage. Along the way, I met and spoke with the witness, Jose, the resident who awoke from the sound of explosions, and the psychic lady who lived next to the Mozza Pizzeria.
A Few Odds and Ends:
It was rather surprising to see that Hatzolah was on scene before LAPD. I had never heard of Hatzolah before. As a vague comparison, they are a Jewish variation of the Guardian Angels (see Curtis Sliwa), but they only serve the Jewish communities. I thought it so curious that police departments in NY and LA had stalwartly withheld cooperation from the Guardian Angels, yet were managing to tolerate Hatzolah quite nicely.
In fact, I was actually shocked to find that Hatzolah had a booth at the LAPD/Wilshire Division community outreach event this past October. (Click here for the story of how I was invited to the event by a Wilshire Division Lieutenant in this post: Michael Hastings Serendipity)
It so happens that Traffic West, the division in charge of the Hastings investigation, is located in the building next door to the Wilshire Division. In fact, the Hatzolah booth was pretty much next to the Traffic West booth. I snapped photos of the Hatzolah vehicles and marveled that they even have an ambulance. An ambulance, yes, but not a fire extinguisher?
As we observed in the Loud Labs film, one of their response vehicles was there when Loud Labs arrived, as was a towing vehicle. Yet the fire was left to rage until the fire department arrived on scene at least ten minutes later. Nobody had a fire extinguisher. Instead, a local resident sprayed water with a garden hose onto the blaze, spreading the oil and gasoline all over the place with no hope of actually extinguishing the fire.
I asked the man at the Hatzolah booth if these vehicles had responded to the Hastings’ fire. He told me that there are several places in Los Angeles that garage their vehicles. He doubted that either of these particular vehicles had participated. (The other vehicle at the LAPD event was an ambulance. Hatzolah did not appear to have an ambulance at the Hastings crash, only a response car like the one shown below).
Quite disappointingly, LAPD immediately declared the Hastings’ crash to be an accident, even before toxicology results came back. In spite of an engine traveling 180 feet away from a brand of car known to be built like a tank, in spite of absolutely no cracks in the concrete where the engine was found, in spite of residents reporting house rocking, window rattling explosions (not crashing sounds), in spite of a cadaver charred only on the left side after ten minutes in a 2200+ degree inferno, in spite of no skid marks…just a tragic accident.
A Misleading Photo
The photo above makes it all seem pretty clear, when in truth, this photo is very misleading. It was taken with a telephoto lens. Everything is being pulled forward toward the observer. Notice that you can’t see the concrete base of the water pipe in the ground. Its actual position is mid way between the twin palms (the double palms in the foreground) and the kill palm, but it can not be seen in this shot. All of the palms in the shot, with the exception of the first two (the twins), are much further apart than they appear to be here. This is something to keep in mind while trying to make sense of the debris field that you see in that shot. The debris is actually much, much further away from the car and spread over a greater distance than it appears in the photo.
Staff Sargent Joe Biggs
Michael Hastings, first in Iraq, had been a war correspondent in Afghanistan. It was there that he met and befriended Staff Sargent Joe Biggs. They remained friends over time, but once back in the States, they were not close friends in constant communication. They communicated only occasionally. How odd, then, that Michael would have included Biggs in his final email announcing that he was “going off the radar for awhile”. It seems either accidental or…strategic.
From Above Top Secret forum posted by Wan Dashbon Aug, 16 2013 @ 11:37 AM:
“Well – we’re back to Biggs.
I know – I may be putting way more emphasis on this than it deserves…but…it has continued to bug me.
In one of the “Infowars” broadcasts, Biggs was asked when he last spoke (&/or communicated) with Michael Hastings. To my recollection, Biggs placed said “communication” at a number of months prior to Hastings’ demise.
Had Biggs felt the need to “beef up” or “justify” his personal relationship with Hastings, in light of the scrutiny that had already started building on the matter…I could see him ‘fudging’ this detail.
Brynaert detailed that Biggs only had a “couple of tweets” from a year or so ago…as proof of “communicative history” with Hastings.
So – THE SPACE ODDITY IS – Why (if the email was as innocuous as many continue to suggest) did Hastings choose to include Biggs (secretly – if you will) in the list of recipients? “
This was the same email in which Hastings advised that the recipients might want to lawyer up in preparation for FBI visits. We know that colleagues at both BuzzFeed and The Young Turks received the email, but why was Joe Biggs included as a bcc recipient?
Hastings had a Twitter account. In the months leading up to his death, he was tweeting actively and virtually every day, often many times each day. Suddenly, on June 12th, his tweets stopped cold. Aside from a handful of re-tweets, this was Michael’s final Twitter entry:
At dirty wars Q&A: @jeremyscahill jokes google is “NSA’s secret database” playing all next week at landmark theater in LA
Why did Michael suddenly stop tweeting on June 12th? It was reported that he was visited by the FBI right about this time, that he began to distrust his new car in this brief window, that one of his brothers had flown in from the east coast because the family believed that Michael had relapsed into drug use. It was reported that Michael’s other brother was due to arrive the day of Michael’s death. Why didn’t Michael’s wife, Elise Jordan, participate in the intervention?
Why did Elise do an interview with Piers Morgan barely six weeks later during which she positively beamed most of the time? Shades of Robbie Parker, the now infamous laughing Sandy Hook parent. And why were Michael’s remains remanded to his parents and not to his wife? Isn’t that all quite peculiar?
La La Land
All of the material that follows comes from examining the Loud Labs unedited version. I will post a link to the video at the end of this article so that you can see for yourself. I will also include the You Tube times where each still that I show you can be found. This is as good a place as any to note with some consternation that none of the Loud Labs dash cam video bears any time stamping nor does the Mozza security video. All time coordinates quoted are from the respective You Tube timers.
I am about to enter La La Land and you are all invited to join me. Please understand that when I first began to investigate this case, I never expected to end up here and I never expected to find ….well, you’ll see.
2:54-3:15-LL’s car is stopped at a red light on Santa Monica Blvd and Formosa Ave. A white, double cab pick up truck towing a trailer makes a left turn. The trailer has several tires on it and an object shrouded in a white or reflective cloth. The silhouette of the object bears suspicious similarity to the engine/transmission found on the corner of Highland and Clinton.
4:00 LL car pulls into position at corner gas station at Santa Monica Blvd. and Highland
5:46 Purported Hastings’ Mercedes runs the red light and zips by
(Look at the times…4:00 and 5:46…Lane arrived just 1 minute and 46 seconds before the Mercedes went flying by…incredible serendipity.)
6:21-6:23 Light turns green and a jeep and a station wagon drive by
7:38 White pick up truck turns right on Santa Monica Blvd as LL car approaches
7:47 White pick up pulls over to the right curb
7:53 LL car passes white pick up
(Note: This may be a red herring of sorts. The right tail light of this vehicle is not working. Unfortunately, the right tail light on the white truck pulling the strange cargo is never visible due to the angles of the respective vehicles as well as the trailer being pulled behind it. Given the hour and the “upscale” nature of the neighborhood, we are having an unusual number of white pick up truck sightings this night.)
17:32 White double cab pick up truck pulls out and turns right onto Highland south from Rosewood.
As was noted above, the white pick up truck makes its debut at the corner of Formosa and Santa Monica Blvd. where it turns left onto Santa Monica Blvd. heading east. All of the following maps are from Bing. The first is an overhead of what is now known as “The Lot”. It is a movie production lot.
This was the movie production lot that started out its life as Pickfair, owned by silent movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. It dates back to 1917. The studio has changed hands many times over the decades. The current owner is Skye Partners and they rent it out for private use. Today, it is known simply as “The Lot”.
Across Formosa is a large parking lot. It is a small ocean of white pick up trucks, as you can see in the second overhead. However, these all appear to be utility vehicles belonging to the gas company and bear gas company logos on their cab doors.
The likely route of the white pick up is marked with green (photo above). This is the path that the white pick up truck with the trailer took. Scott Lane from Loud Labs was supposed to have already passed this spot by the time the truck emerges. This was a precision timing event and Lane missed his cue.
In the unedited version, Scott’s event begins at the corner of Santa Monica and North Vista. We hear tapping sounds. He is most likely engaged in a live chat with someone. Then we hear him complain, “You are such a little bitch!”. It would seem that Scott was being scolded. He then puts the car into gear and moves up to the traffic light and has to wait for the light to turn green so that he can make his left.
Lane heads for the gas station (where he does not get any gas) at the corner of Santa Monica and Highland. Fortunately, or unfortunately, along the way, he caught the red light at Formosa just when the white pick up was starting its run.
The white pick up was in process of delivering the engine/transmission component to the corner of Highland and Clinton. Lane’s primary assignment was to capture the video of a Mercedes running a red light at the Highland/Santa Monica corner. But he dilly dallied …he ran late by about a minute and a half. Had he been on time, he would not have captured the white pick up with its tell tale cargo.
Here is a map focusing on the white pick up with its trailer and peculiar cargo. There is a very important detail that has to be considered. The truck itself weighs over 5,000 lbs. If we add the weight of the trailer and all of the cargo on that trailer, including a 600 lb engine, he was well over 6,000 lbs. The driver could not travel south down Formosa, a far more direct route to the barbecue, because there are weight restrictions posted all throughout the area, including at the corner of Formosa and Melrose:
This would explain why the driver of the white pick up truck traveled north on Formosa instead of south and why he turned left onto Santa Monica Blvd. instead of right. Follow the green arrows and note the route distance/time estimate. Keep in mind that there would have been extremely light traffic around 4 am when this was taking place. The time estimate is 3 minutes with traffic.
There was plenty of time for the white pick up to deliver and unhitch its cargo and continue on its way by the time that Scott Lane arrived on scene at the crash site on Highland south of Melrose. And yes, the engine/transmission was very heavy, too heavy for placing gently on the concrete over a storm drain by a couple of stage hands, let’s say. Perhaps that is what the tow truck was doing there. After all, it seems to me that a tow truck driver on duty would realize that the blazing car wasn’t going anywhere any time soon, and when it did, it would need a flat bed truck, not the winch and pulley model….not the winch and pulley model.
Why aren’t there any cars parked along the street? Across the street was almost full with parked cars, but not the south bound side. Hmmm.
