Michael Hastings-We’re Not in Kansas Anymore! Pt. 3-Revised

The Wizard's Hologram

The Wizard’s Hologram

When I first heard about the Michael Hastings crash , I remember getting that creeped out feeling that I get sometimes, times when I immediately know  that something is not right with a story…solar plexus tom-toms.

My serenity was being assaulted once again, nerves torn asunder.  I hadn’t yet quite recovered from Sandy Hook and the Boston Bombings, yet here it came again. Incoming B.S.-duck and cover.  And since this one was in my backyard, I finally had a little home court advantage.  Along the way, I met and spoke with the witness, Jose, the resident who awoke from the sound of explosions, and the psychic lady who lived next to the Mozza Pizzeria.

A Few Odds and Ends:

Hatzolah

It was rather surprising to see that Hatzolah was on scene before LAPD.  I had never heard of Hatzolah before.  As a vague comparison,  they are a Jewish variation of the Guardian Angels (see Curtis Sliwa), but they only serve the Jewish communities.  I thought it so curious that police departments in NY and LA had stalwartly withheld cooperation from the Guardian Angels, yet were managing to tolerate Hatzolah quite nicely.

In fact, I was actually shocked to find that Hatzolah had a booth at the LAPD/Wilshire Division community outreach event this past October. (Click here for the story of how I was invited to the event by a Wilshire Division Lieutenant in this post: Michael Hastings Serendipity)

It so happens that Traffic West, the division in charge of the Hastings investigation, is located in the building next door to the Wilshire Division. In fact, the Hatzolah booth was pretty much next to the Traffic West booth. I snapped photos of the Hatzolah vehicles and marveled that they even have an ambulance.   An ambulance, yes, but not a fire extinguisher?

As we observed in the Loud Labs film, one of their response vehicles was there when Loud Labs arrived, as was a towing vehicle.  Yet the fire was left to rage until the fire department arrived on scene at least ten minutes later. Nobody had a fire extinguisher.  Instead, a local resident sprayed water with a garden hose onto the blaze, spreading the oil and gasoline all over the place with no hope of actually extinguishing the fire.

I asked the man at the Hatzolah booth if these vehicles had responded to the Hastings’ fire. He told me that there are several places in Los Angeles that garage their vehicles. He doubted that either of these particular vehicles had participated.  (The other vehicle at the LAPD event was an ambulance. Hatzolah did not appear to have an ambulance at the Hastings crash, only a response car like the one shown below).

Hatzolah at LAPD open house

Hatzolah at LAPD open house

Quite disappointingly, LAPD immediately declared the Hastings’ crash to be an accident, even before toxicology results came back.  In spite of an engine traveling 180 feet away from a brand of car known to be built like a tank, in spite of absolutely no cracks in the concrete where the engine was found, in spite of residents reporting house rocking, window rattling explosions (not crashing sounds), in spite of a cadaver charred only on the left side after ten minutes in a 2200+ degree inferno, in spite of no skid marks…just a tragic accident.

A Misleading Photo

Debris field/telephoto lens

Debris field/telephoto lens

The photo above makes it all seem pretty clear, when in truth, this photo is very misleading.    It was taken with a telephoto lens.   Everything is being pulled forward toward the observer.  Notice that you can’t see the concrete base of the water pipe in the ground.  Its actual position is mid way between the twin palms (the double palms in the foreground)  and the kill palm, but it can not be seen in this shot.  All of the palms in the shot, with the exception of the first two (the twins), are much further apart than they appear to be here.  This is something to keep in mind while trying to make sense of the debris field that you see in that shot.  The debris is actually much, much further away from the car and spread over a greater distance than it appears in the photo.

Staff Sargent Joe Biggs

Michael Hastings, first in Iraq,  had been a war correspondent in Afghanistan.  It was there that he met and befriended Staff Sargent Joe Biggs.  They remained friends over time, but once back in the States, they were not close friends in constant communication.  They communicated only occasionally. How odd, then, that Michael would have included Biggs in his final email announcing that he was “going off the radar for awhile”.   It seems either accidental or…strategic.

From Above Top Secret forum posted by Wan Dashbon Aug, 16 2013 @ 11:37 AM:
“Well – we’re back to Biggs.
I know – I may be putting way more emphasis on this than it deserves…but…it has continued to bug me.
In one of the “Infowars” broadcasts, Biggs was asked when he last spoke (&/or communicated) with Michael Hastings. To my recollection, Biggs placed said “communication” at a number of months prior to Hastings’ demise.
Had Biggs felt the need to “beef up” or “justify” his personal relationship with Hastings, in light of the scrutiny that had already started building on the matter…I could see him ‘fudging’ this detail.
Brynaert detailed that Biggs only had a “couple of tweets” from a year or so ago…as proof of “communicative history” with Hastings.
So – THE SPACE ODDITY IS – Why (if the email was as innocuous as many continue to suggest) did Hastings choose to include Biggs (secretly – if you will) in the list of recipients? “

This was the same email in which Hastings advised that the recipients might want to lawyer up in preparation for FBI visits.  We know that colleagues at both BuzzFeed and The Young Turks received the email, but why was Joe Biggs included as a bcc recipient?

Hastings had a Twitter account.  In the months leading up to his death, he was tweeting actively and virtually every day, often many times each day.  Suddenly, on June 12th, his tweets stopped cold.  Aside from a handful of re-tweets, this was Michael’s final Twitter entry:

At dirty wars Q&A: @jeremyscahill jokes google is “NSA’s secret database” playing all next week at landmark theater in LA

Why did Michael suddenly stop tweeting on June 12th?  It was reported that he was visited by the FBI right about this time, that he began to distrust his new car in this brief window, that one of his brothers had flown in from the east coast because the family believed that Michael had relapsed into drug use.  It was reported that Michael’s other brother was due to arrive the day of Michael’s death.  Why didn’t Michael’s wife, Elise Jordan, participate in the intervention?

Why did Elise do an interview with Piers Morgan barely six weeks later during which she positively beamed most of the time?  Shades of Robbie Parker, the now infamous laughing Sandy Hook parent.  And why were Michael’s remains remanded to his parents and not to his wife?  Isn’t that all quite peculiar?

La La Land

All of the material that follows comes from examining the Loud Labs unedited version. I will post a link to the video at the end of this article so that you can see for yourself.  I will also include the You Tube times where each still that I show you can be found.  This is as good a place as any to note with some consternation that none of the Loud Labs dash cam video bears any time stamping nor does the Mozza security video.  All time coordinates quoted are from the respective You Tube timers.

I am about to enter La La Land and you are all invited to join me.  Please understand that when I first began to investigate this case, I never expected to end up here and I never expected to find ….well, you’ll see.

2:54-3:15-LL’s car is stopped at a red light on Santa Monica Blvd and Formosa Ave.  A white, double cab pick up truck towing a trailer makes a left turn.  The trailer has several tires on it and an object shrouded in a white or reflective cloth.  The silhouette of the object bears suspicious similarity to the engine/transmission found on the corner of Highland and Clinton.

 The Lot

As was noted above, the white pick up truck makes its debut at the corner of Formosa and Santa Monica Blvd. where it turns left onto Santa Monica Blvd. heading east.   All of the following maps are from Bing.  The first is an overhead of what is now known as “The Lot”.  It is a movie production lot.

This was the movie production lot that started out its life as Pickfair, owned by silent movie stars Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks.  It dates back to 1917.   The studio has changed hands many times over the decades.  The current owner is Skye Partners and they rent it out for private use.  Today, it is known simply as “The Lot”.

Across Formosa is a large parking lot.  It is a small ocean of white pick up trucks, as you can see in the second overhead.  However, these all appear to be utility vehicles belonging to the gas company and bear gas company logos on their cab doors.

Path of the White Pick Up

Path of the White Pick Up

The likely route of the white pick up is marked with green (photo above).  This is the path that the white pick up truck with the trailer took.  Scott Lane from Loud Labs was supposed to have already passed this spot by the time the truck emerges.  This was a precision timing event and Lane missed his cue.

In the unedited version, Scott’s event begins at the corner of Santa Monica and North Vista.  We hear tapping sounds.  He is most likely engaged in a live chat with someone.  Then we hear him complain, “You are such a little bitch!”.   It would seem that Scott was being scolded.  He then  puts the car into gear and moves up to the traffic light and has to wait for the light to turn green so that he can make his left.

Lane heads for the gas station (where he does not get any gas) at the corner of Santa Monica and Highland.  Fortunately, or unfortunately, along the way, he caught the red light at Formosa just when the white pick up was starting its run.

The white pick up was in process of delivering the engine/transmission component to the corner of Highland and Clinton.  Lane’s primary assignment was to capture the video of a Mercedes running a red light at the Highland/Santa Monica corner.  But he dilly dallied …he ran late by about a minute and a half.  Had he been on time, he would not have captured the white pick up with its tell tale cargo.

Here is a map focusing on the white pick up with its trailer and peculiar cargo.  There is a very important detail that has to be considered.  The truck itself weighs over 5,000 lbs.  If we add the weight of the trailer and all of the cargo on that trailer, including a 600 lb engine,  he was well over 6,000 lbs.  The driver could not travel south down Formosa, a far more direct route to the barbecue,  because there are weight restrictions posted all throughout the area, including at the corner of Formosa and Melrose:

Formosa/Melrose weight restriction

Formosa/Melrose weight restriction

This would explain why the driver of the white pick up truck traveled north on Formosa instead of south and why he turned left onto Santa Monica Blvd. instead of right.  Follow the green arrows and note the route distance/time estimate.  Keep in mind that there would have been extremely light traffic around 4 am when this was taking place.  The time estimate is 3 minutes with traffic.

white pick up route

white pick up route

There was plenty of time for the white pick up to deliver and unhitch its cargo and continue on its way by the time that Scott Lane arrived on scene at the crash site on Highland south of  Melrose.  And yes, the engine/transmission was very heavy, too heavy for placing gently on the concrete over a storm drain by a couple of stage hands, let’s say.  Perhaps that is what the tow truck was doing there.  After all, it seems to me that a tow truck driver on duty would realize that the blazing car wasn’t going anywhere any time soon, and when it did, it would need a flat bed truck, not the winch and pulley model….not the winch and pulley model.

Michael Hastings-We’re Not

in Kansas Anymore!  Pt. 2

Dorothy-figures-things-out

Is This Real or Am I Dreaming?

Young, up and coming, pugnacious rebel journalist with a demonstrably evolved social conscience, for no particular reason, jumps in to his brand new Mercedes C250 sometime around four a.m., speeds along a main thoroughfare through an upscale neighborhood going over 80 mph, and is caught on video blasting through a red light.

Loud Lab News

By miracle (or design?), Scott Lane, a man with a running dash cam happened to park in just the right position at a corner gas station (Santa Monica Blvd and Highland), and happened to capture the red light breach on video. Approximately five minutes later, this same man arrived on scene at the crash site, leaving his dash cam running while he took a portable camera with him to film the burning car.  Thus, we have two videos.  One is known as the Loud Labs unedited version which is, essentially, the twenty four minute long dash cam footage.  The unedited version chronicles Loud Labs meanderings beginning at the corner of Santa Monica and North  Vista, the stop at the traffic light at Santa Monica and Formosa (where a white pick up truck turns left in front of the Loud Labs car) , the stop at the gas station at Santa Monica and Highland,  the convoluted route to the accident site after driver Scott Lane heard the police scanner call announcing the accident, the arrival on site, and the parking of the car at Highland and Clinton. The edited version includes the footage of the Mercedes running the red light spliced together with the footage of the burning car taken with the hand held camera.  In combination with security camera footage from Pizzeria Mozza, this is the most thoroughly documented “accident” in history.

Top 10 Reasons Why This Was Not an Accident

There are far too many impossibilities, coincidences, and out right violations of natural law within the Hastings event for it to have been anything as mundane as an accident, nor, as some have speculated,  the work of an assassin hired by a vengeful wife, nor even the FBI.  Here are a few of the most glaring anomalies:

1) Brand new Mercedes C250 rears up like an angry stallion and pukes out its engine, transmission and drive shaft.  Said puke weighing approx 600 lbs travels 180 ft through a palm tree.   Said puke weighing approx 600 lbs passes through a palm tree but leaves the tree intact (very cool trick)

2) 600 lb + engine/transmission lands on a thin concrete slab over the hollow of a sewer but does not even leave a small fracture nor crack in the concrete (very, very cool trick)  Look,ma…not even a hairline fracture! :

Sewer at Highland and Clinton

Sewer at Highland and Clinton

3) Scott Lane of Loud Labs happened to  park in just the right spot with his dash cam pointed just the right way and caught the speeding Mercedes.  He arrived on scene just one minute and forty two seconds before the Mercedes passed by.

4) Scott Lane took approximately 5 minutes to arrive at the crash site and documented the car engulfed by a ferocious fire of at least 2200 degrees F. (white hot fire).  But gasoline fires typically burn at about 500 degrees F. and have a distinct orange and deep red flame-Hastings’ was white and yellow which is 2200-2600 degrees F.  This is twice as hot as a crematorium!

5) The Jaws of Life were used to extract remains from the car -the left side of the body was charred with clothing burned or burned away, the head was 100% charred (beyond recognition).  Jaws of life were used, yet calculations of the car speed as it crossed the median show that it had slowed to 35 mph just before the first explosion occurred.  Note…residents at that end of the block reported explosions, not the sound of a crash.

6) The right side of body was not burned, clothing was intact, wallet was in place, license and medical marijuana card could be read despite approx 11 minutes spent barbecuing in a white hot fire of approximately 2200 degrees F.. Photographic evidence showed a thoroughly burned car interior.  Loud Labs video confirmed that the car was fully engulfed in flames for a prolonged period, not just the left side of car.

Witness Claims Body Not Charred

Witness Claims Body Not Charred

7) The FBI, which publicly stated that it has no file on Hastings, was sent finger prints from a corpse that should have had no fingerprints left to lift. Two days later, ta-da! The body belongs to Hastings because the impossible prints match the FBI prints on file that are in a file that it did not have.

8) A tire came off of the driver’s side front wheel. The rim should have left much deep grooving on the median or in the street. Two witnesses describe spinning/jack knifing, yet there were no marks to correspond to this, neither on the median nor the street.

9)  There were only one or two cars parked on the south bound side of Highland (the side of the accident) yet north bound had a more typical number of cars parked along the street.  This had nothing to do with street sweeping restrictions which forbid parking between 12 noon and 3:00 pm one day per week.

10) The primary witness, Jose, was standing in a building looking out of a donut shop window.  He was too far away to have seen the accident clearly. The low level lighting on the block, the thick trees, the cars parked on the north bound side that the witness was on, all would have obstructed his view.

Donuts, anyone?

Eyewitness Jose was standing in a donut shop window and would have been a bit more to the left than this shot depicts (inside the shop).  The vertical red line in the distance is the “kill palm”.  It would be very, very difficult to see clearly that far down, most especially in the pitch dark.

Blue line = Highland Ave., southbound lane

Yellow lines =approximate limits of Mozza security camera’s view.  The camera in question is located under an awning, the shape of which contributed to creating observational obstruction.   A sudden flood of horizontal light obliterated key details such as the vomiting of the engine, the flight of the engine through the air, etc.  This peculiar horizontal light is not affected by the explosions that follow.  This light looks and behaves more like fog

The explosion itself registers as a vertical light and the vertical light is much, much brighter than the horizontal light, suggesting that the source of the horizontal light may have been both fixed and artificial.   Headlights of an oncoming car? Sorry, not enough lumens.  It takes a light source with the candle power of a Klieg light to light up that much real estate. (Lumen=The SI unit of luminous flux, equal to the amount of light emitted per second in a unit solid angle of one steradian from a uniform source of one candela.)

Michael Hastings-Serendipity?

Spanakopita

Spanakopita

Oxford Dictionaries:

Serendipity

Syllabification: (ser·en·dip·i·ty)
Pronunciation: /ˌserənˈdipitē/

noun

  • the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way

Origin:

1754: coined by Horace Walpole, suggested by The Three Princes of Serendip, the title of a fairy tale in which the heroes “were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things they were not in quest of.

So, here is what happened:

Sept 18, 2013-I had a morning errand and returned home.  I was getting low on fuel and was trying to decide if I should go back out and get $20 worth of gas (most of the money I had) or just add $10 and maybe go get a cup of coffee, maybe a breakfast sandwich, too.  The sandwich won and I pulled in to the parking lot of my favorite coffee shop.

As I was backing out of my parking space, my car stalled out.  But it started right up again, so I proceeded, wondering if I should take the first right turn into a neighborhood.  It is a shortcut in miles, but it takes longer  My rear license plate had been stolen a few weeks back and it’s a nuisance to pull out my copy of the police report that I filed.  The neighborhood route would be the more “police free” selection.

I decided on the cop avoidance route and made my right hand turn into the neighborhood.  I was stunned silly by the sight of a patrol car not five feet up the block.  They were in the middle of pulling over a long haired Caucasian Rastafarian (really).  I figured they were busy, so my odds were excellent for gliding right on past them without incident.  Unfortunately, just as I got door to door with them, my car died.  It totally died.  I kept turning the ignition but the engine just wouldn’t fire up.

They finished up with Mr. Thousand Braids and then approached me.  I got out of my car and shrugged my shoulders at the first cop.  I could see that the second one was punching something up on a little hand held device.  I offered up that the back plate had been stolen.  He smiled and said that’s what he was just checking on.  He explained to me that my car would have to be moved.  I was blocking the street and he gave me all of my options, all of which were expensive.

All of that is strange enough.  But it gets more strange.  Officer number two…there was something about him.  I started talking to him, asking him questions.  I’d say that he was in his early to mid thirties, blond, slender, medium height.  I keep wracking my brain, trying to remember how I got him to talk to me, but this man, in perfectly executed English, told me that he actually grew up in Russia.  I was so shocked. He had no trace of an accent. Nothing.  I have studied many languages, including Russian, and I have a very good ear.  I would have thought that he had grown up on the mid west.  He was perfectly “American” in every possible way…absolutely flawless in every aspect

I marveled at the perfection of his entire American personna.  I found myself saying to him, “So, Mr. KGB, where did you learn to speak such perfect English?  What part of Russia are you from?”  He smiled and said, “Moscow…the language training there, it’s very good.”

But then it became more strange.  I asked him what precinct he was attached to.  He answered “Wilshire Division”.  My heart stopped beating.  No way…the division that houses Traffic West.  Traffic West  is the investigating unit handling the Michael Hastings case.        To be certain, I asked him where his precinct was located.  “On Venice Blvd., right near La Brea. ”

“Aren’t you from the division that responded to the Hastings’ crash?”, I asked.  He said that he had no idea but it was possible.  I followed up with  “Is there a Detective White there with you?”  The look on his face changed.  I saw a glimmer of recognition when he heard the name.  “Everybody has different shifts…maybe”.   Then, he and his partner got behind my car and physically pushed it (with me inside steering) into a neighboring parking lot and into a parking space.

That should be the end of all this serendipity, but no.  The final leg of my ordeal involved walking home a very long distance.  Toward the end of the ridiculous hike,  everything was hurting quite a bit, especially my feet.  I wear very high heels to compensate for my lack of height.

I decided to focus my eyes on the ground so that the psychology of the distance that I still had to go would not get the upper hand.  Then, I noticed something that I had never noticed before.  I was passing by these little security cages that looked identical to the one that reportedly came off the median on Highland.  I stopped and touched one.  It was made of metal and was painted that same shade of green as the damaged one photographed from the Hastings’ crash.   They were, indeed, bolted into those concrete rectangles.  I pulled out my camera and snapped a photo.  This one was less than three feet tall.  The cage from Hastings’ looked much bigger.  But why would it be?

Spanakopita

After I finally arrived home, I began to give considerable thought to what had just been granted me by pure fate.  The two officers had been incredibly kind and helpful.  I make Spanakopita several times a year.   People  seem to enjoy it, so I called in to Wilshire Division to find out if a gift of Greek spinach pie would be acceptable.  To my surprise, I was put through to the Watch Lieutenant.  He welcomed me over, so I cooked up a big batch and drove them over.

The Lieutenant came out to speak to me.  He let me know how nice it felt to have somebody who had a positive comment and promised me that he was adding a note to the officers’ files.  As I prepared to leave, he pointed out a stack of flyers and urged me to take one.  “We are having an open house on Sunday.  You are welcome to attend.”  I smiled and took a copy of the flyer. Tomorrow is Sunday!   It would be wonderful if Detective White attends.

What, you might ask, caused my car to completely die on the street that day?  The timing belt broke along with the balance belt and the timing sensor.  Indeed, timing is everything.

Michael Hastings-We’re Not in Kansas Anymore!!!

Part 1

Kansas

Kansas

I am sure that most people have seen the movie “The Wizard of Oz” at least once.  The movie starts out in black and white as we are introduced to the simple life on a simple farm in the state of Kansas.

It’s only when the character, Dorothy, wakes up to the world of Oz after a nasty bump to the head that everything changes.   Reality becomes an entirely different place., unbelievable yet entirely real, complete with horses of a different color!

The story, penned by L. Frank Baum , is a breathing metaphor to be enjoyed by children and adults alike.   This is a story with many levels and most certainly, Baum has gifted us with a rare and timeless gem.

Now, on with our metaphor-

                                                                                   The Black and White

                                                                                                      Intro

Inter Dimensional Chessboard

Inter Dimensional Chessboard

The basic narrative was fed to us this way:

Not long before Michael Hastings’ crash, the scene was being set over a period of a few weeks that he was becoming paranoid of the government, most particularly the FBI.  Hastings’ association with Barrett Brown was bringing unwelcome scrutiny to Hastings, we were told.

Only hours before the horrific crash, he had dashed out an email informing friends and associates that he was working on a very, very big story and had to lay low for awhile.  At first, it was reported to be a story on General Petraeus’ friend, Jill Kelly.  (When that was refuted by Kelly, others began to offer that the story was really about the CIA’s chief Brennan or possibly the NSA).

The next thing we knew,  at 4:19 in the morning on June 18th 2013 , Hastings sped through a red light at Highland and Santa Monica Blvd. doing 100 mph, lost control of the car just south of Melrose Ave., climbed the median, hit a fire hydrant, and slammed face first into a tree.  It was just another case of Paranoia Percussion….obviously.

There are no fire hydrants anywhere on any of the Highland Avenue medians.  Here is an example of the killer PVC pipe that is actually used on the medians.  This is the tallest one.  The other medians sport shorter ones.  In any event, they are plastic.

HA-Highland-waterpipe2

The fatal crash with its two story high, inferno-like white hot flames was apparently so routine that LAPD did not see any need to bump the case up out of traffic investigation.  Even the find of an engine block complete with transmission and drive shaft some 180 feet away from the impact did not raise an eyebrow at LAPD.   The phrase “Immaculate Ejection”** had not yet been coined.

The Immaculate Coincidence

On the morning of June 18th, in the wee hours of an ordinary Monday, a recently acquired Mercedes C 250 tore through a red light at Highland and Santa Monica.  A Crown Victoria belonging to Loud Labs, complete with running dash cam, just happened to be parked at the corner in a gas station parking lot.  Facing west, dash cam running, Scott Lane got a super-sized squeeze from the universe as the Mercedes flashed by right in front of his dash cam!

The distracted Lane hadn’t noticed and a few minutes later, he began to pull out of the gas station heading for home when he heard a police broadcast on his scanner about a big crash on Highland south of Melrose!   Off he went to capture the footage of a lifetime.  Double bonus.

The notoriety for having done so has netted Scott Lane and Loud Labs millions of dollars worth of free publicity.   For Scott, this was a lottery mega prize. and even better, with no tax consequences.   Scott Lane, kissed by coincidence!  Sweet!

A man named Jose was getting his coffee at Yum Yum Donuts at the corner of Highland and Melrose when the Mercedes whizzed by.  Jose starts work early at ALSCO just up the street at Highland and Willoughby.  Loud Labs gave Jose some face time as Jose struggled to tell what he saw…fire in the back of the car, the gas tank dragging on the ground making lots of sparks, the car bottoming out three times just as it crossed Melrose, the car must have hit a pothole and the driver lost control.  Jose shaped the narrative through three on camera interviews.  Just a humble working man, he saw it all….in the dead of the night…through the inky blackness of an un-illuminated median and a long row of fat palms…from here

These shots are from the Loud Labs Unedited version as Lane drives east on Santa Monica Blvd a few blocks before he reaches the Mobil station at the corner of Santa Mobica and Highland.  Lane stops for a red light and this white truck emerges from the right and turns left in front of him.

This could be just another Rorschach test, but is the silvery thing toward the end of the load an engine?

While Scott Lane is away from his parked vehicle, the dashcam recorded that white pick up truck (pictured above) emerging from Rosewood.  It makes a left and procedes south on Highland.  Does it not look like the same truck captured earlier on Santa Monica Blvd, the one with the peculiar hitch and even more peculiar cargo?  The hitch and cargo are gone by this point.  Is it possible that it was hauling an engine and various parts to strew about?

LAPD was so convinced that this was just an every day, ordinary car accident that they didn’t call in their homocide division.  Brand new Mercedes go off like nuclear bombs all the time. And no, you can’t have any of the public records, photographs, coroner reports and while we are on the subject, please keep your FOIA requests to yourselves. We are busy solving real crimes. And now, even the grieving widow, Elise Jordan, is saying that it was “just a tragic accident”.   For those who have been digging deeper into this bizarre incident, Michael Hastings’ crash was anything but “just a tragic accident”. Here are the primary facts before us that call in to question the “tragic accident” explanation:

1)  Life in L.A. is fun as hell, but we draw the line at driving through neighborhoods at 100+ MPH, blowing red lights along the way…unless we are being chased by the police, in which case there is always a TV news helicopter streaming the footage to the newsroom so that it can be beamed live to a chase hungry populace.  Which brings us to a question.   Where were the police?

Where were Hollywood's finest?

Where were Hollywood’s finest?

Los Angeles has approximately ten thousand uniformed officers.  You can’t drive five blocks without seeing a patrol car.  Hastings’ car was tearing through seedy Hollywood before reaching Melrose.  Of necessity, tourist mecca Hollywood gets plenty of police coverage, So… where were they?

2)  Engine/transmission:  The engine weighs hundreds of lbs. and is designed to drop down in the event of a collision.  The transmission also weighs hundreds of lbs and is located in the center of the auto.  The engine compartment of a Mercedes is loaded with reinforced steel.  None of this facilitates in the least a nearly two hundred foot launch (on a diagonal) of these extremely heavy engine components.

Mercedes Crash 8/4/13 Katie Lenz

Mercedes Crash 8/4/13
Katie Lenz

The Mercedes to the left suffered a head on collision with a drunk driver a few days ago.  Thankfully, the young driver survived. Rescuers were thwarted from cutting through the dense metal to extricate the bleeding driver until special equipment arrived. The problem was the construction of the Mercedes and all the reinforced steel.  Their standard cutting tools were dulled within seconds.

Please note  that the Mercedes did not explode and the transmission did not leave the car.

3)  There were several explosions of Hastings’ car and one of these was massive. Temperatures soared above 2,000 degrees F.  Cremation of human remains is performed at 1,100 degrees F. At temperatures more than double those used in cremation, flesh will begin to bubble, burn and crack after just a few seconds of exposure.   How then, after at least ten minutes, might one find a sanguinated corpse from which blood samples might be drawn for toxicology tests?  And fingerprints?  From what?

HA-3

White hot-wheel rim bolt explodes from the car. Why would a witness tell Infowars that she saw a corpse of a young male 25-30 years old with intact clothing, white arms, charring only of the head down to the shoulders? Why would the coroner take two days to make an identification telling the L.A. Times that the body was burned beyond recognition and dental records had been requested?

If that is true, then why was it reported that Hastings had been identified from fingerprints that the FBI had on file?   We were told that the FBI wasn’t investigating him.  Why would they have Michael Hastings’ fingerprints if they weren’t investigating him?  And how could a human body come out of that raging inferno  complete with viable fingerprints  sporting an intact, grey, short sleeve tee-shirt and slacks?

If this was just a simple accident….why are so many people lying?

Conspiracy Theory

Challenges to official fabrications are always labeled as conspiracy theories concocted by the tin foil hat set.  Come on, all together now people, “Chuckle, chuckle”.   This has been a most effective strategy for well over fifty years.  Knuckle heads asking pesky questions are kicked to the gutter with two simple words-conspiracy theorist.   Nothing to see here, folks, just tin foil.

Sadly for the perpetrators, sooner or later, all the worms crawl up from the mud. Consider the case of Princess Diana.  It was just a tragic accident.  The driver was drunk, toxicology said so, even though he was videotaped acting quite sober minutes before they left the hotel in the Mercedes:

Princess Diana: Police Investigating Conspiracy?

It was just reported that British police are taking another look into the deaths of Princess Diana and her companion, Dodi Al Fayed, after a person close to the suspect reported that a member of British Special Forces, had been ordered to eliminate Princess Diana.

Police admitted that they were looking into the “relevance and credibility” of the new accusation.  They also emphasized that they were not reopening the case.

A new report alleges that detectives are looking into claims that Diana was murdered by a a Special Air Service sniper, Sergeant Danny Nightingale, according to The Telegraph.  More specifically, police are reportedly investigating the claim that Nightingale was given orders by a senior officer to take down Princess Di and her boyfriend, Dodi Fayed.

From the start, “conspiracy theorists” have alleged that Diana’s death was a setup,  This reported new investigation is “unprecedented,” according to The Telegraph.

According to Wikipedia:

“An alternative explanation for the cause of the crash has been reports of a bright white flash just before the car entered the tunnel, blinding the driver. Richard Tomlinson made this allegation in media interviews and claimed it was consistent with eyewitness testimony.

Operation Paget investigated Tomlinson’s claim that the use of a powerful strobe light to blind helicopter pilots formed part of MI6 agents’ training in the early 1990s and it was apparent this tactic had been used to facilitate the murder of Diana. The police found that such a tactic never, at any time, formed part of MI6 training.

The detail of eyewitness testimony was thoroughly reviewed and Operation Paget officers succeeded in uncovering two new witnesses. The police found that only one eyewitness at the scene of the crash, François Levistre, made a clear, specific reference to seeing a bright flash. He claimed to have seen it in his rear-view mirror and recounted other elements of what he saw in considerable detail while he was negotiating the difficult bend out of the tunnel, a task which would have required his full attention on the road in front of him. Crucially, however, his testimony was directly contradicted by his then-wife, who sat in the passenger seat next to him. Television documentaries produced by Channel 4 in 2004 and the BBC in 2006 both raised the issue of Levistre’s prior criminal record for offences involving dishonesty.

Other eyewitness testimony made little reference to the appearance of any inexplicable flashes at the crash site. Several witnesses who would be expected to have seen a blinding flash made no reference to one.

In any event, the detailed crash reconstruction revealed that the chain of events that led to the car unavoidably colliding with the pillar started well before it was at the mouth of the tunnel where the flash is alleged to have been discharged. Furthermore, a strobe light of the type that was alleged to have been used is so powerful that a flash emitted from it would have been bright enough to illuminate a very wide area. It would have likely blinded not only Henri Paul, but also the driver of the white Fiat Uno, the pursuing paparazzi and witnesses standing at the road side. The Operation Paget report concluded the alleged flash did not happen. However, eye witness Brian Anderson, an American tourist says that he saw a bright flash too.”

Diana knew that her death by Mercedes was being planned.  Why wasn’t she wearing her seat belt that night?  On the other hand, she survived the crash but she did not survive the ambulance transport.  It sat in place for an hour and forty five minutes with her inside it before heading off to the hospital.

Rorschach Test

Rorschach blot 1

Rorschach blot 1

The more closely one examines the Loud Lab video and the Pizzeria Mozza security video, the more it feels like a Rorschach test…look at the picture and tell us what you see.

Unfortunately, the Pizzeria Mozza security video is blurry and grainy.  The awning above the camera, the scalloping on the awning, the angle of the security camera , the darkness on the median, the sudden dousing of the car lights- all work together to create a dangerous playground for the mind.

The surveillance video does nothing to solve the mystery of  how the car managed to eject its transmission and catapult it nearly two hundred feet. Instead, the video lays waste official proclamations of a high speed car crash into a palm tree, refutes eye witness accounts of sparks and fire, fish tailing, and jack knifing (how does a passenger car jack knife, anyway?)

It ends with a series of light blasts that are just as impossible as its six hundred plus lb. engine/transmission/drive shaft launching through a palm tree (leaving the palm tree intact) and fluttering to the concrete corner two hundred feet away on a diagonal, landing with such gracefulness that it did not leave so much as a hairline crack beneath its landing spot.

This is the kind of blast that you bring a radiation detector to:

Vanishing Point

Example of a vanishing point

Example of a vanishing point

Wikipedia says “A vanishing point is a point in a perspective drawing to which parallel lines not perpendicular to the image plane appear to converge”.

From the point of view of the security camera at Pizzeria Mozza, the first palm following the kill palm is pretty much the camera’s horizon or vanishing point.

This spot is depicted by the red dot in the screen capture below.

Mozza security camera vanishing point

If bright light were  flooded   across this  point, it  would function  like  a  curtain.  Things  can  appear, things  can  disappear, all  quite  unobserved  in spite of  being  watched.

The Mozza Security Video

I can’t say how many times I watched that video. I also can’t tell you how long it took me to notice what I am about to show you next. I was so focused on the car, the median, the double palms just before the water pipe, the eerie light and the massive explosions.  And then, it finally registered. Here is a screenshot of the 1st second of the video, just to show you that these strange objects were there from the start.  I do not know what they are and if you do, please let me know.

Both of these items appear in all frames until the large burst of light near the end, at which point, the item in the upper right corner joins the other item in the driveway, leaving behind what looks like an empty shelf or bracket:

What are these things?

What are these things?

Somewhere around 17 seconds, the mysterious object in the upper right corner disappears and is replaced by an image of a man’s face.  I will assume that the security camera recorded a man who was inside the building and came to the window in response to the sound of an explosion:

H13N

But at 19 seconds following the peak blast, now this:

H13R H13Q

But here is the best one of all.  In the previous article, I posted a screenshot taken of the car as it first comes in to frame.  Everything is stretched…the light from the headlights, the car itself.  Clearly, the camera is overwhelmed by the sudden increase in light  as well as the speed of the car and takes a second or two to adjust focus.  To the right side of the car is something that looks like a streaking missile.  Here is that shot again:

What is this?

What is this?

Remember that there is a protective dome over the surveillance camera lens.  I remember when I was standing under them taking photographs, it occured to me that I was being photographed.  I wondered what I looked like….if the dome would distort my face.

Hastings’ Crash-Anatomy of an Illusion

Part I…and yes, there’s more

The picture to the right is from the now infamous Loud Labs footage on You Tube.  It is at 34 seconds in. The camera man is busy zooming in and out.  As soon as this area comes in to focus at 35 seconds, the camera gets pointed to the ground and…cut!

When it resumes at 36 seconds, the anomalies are gone!  Now you see it, now you don’t.  Here is the sequence:

Loud Labs video at 25 seconds

Loud Labs video at 25 seconds

I would swear that is a light to the right of the short palm.  From the point of view of  security camera #2 at Pizzeria Mozza, the short palm is the vanishing point or event horizon for the camera.  In terms of setting up a skillfully constructed illusion, flooding light right at this point would provide cover for all kinds of shenanigans.

LoudLabs video at 25 seconds

LoudLabs video at 25 seconds

Photo below-I don’t even have a theory as to what that thing to the right of the tree could possibly be.  It seems to sit on a stand and it connects to that odd thing on the ground to the left of the tree.  You see a small pool of light being emitted from it, or so it appears.  At the point in the surveillance video soon after the car’s lights go out, a strange light appears and then seems to grow.   This is followed by a flash and then a series of explosions, each one bigger than the one before. (See the article that immediately precedes this one for the series of stills that comprise this sequence).  I believe that this is the equipment that generated the eerie light.

The camera man was using his zoom at this point and probably did not realize what was in the shot.  Just as this equipment comes in to focus, the camera man suddenly turns the camera toward the ground and then off.

Mozza Security Footage at 12 seconds in

Mozza Security Footage at 12 seconds in

On  July 26th, surveillance footage from June 18th belonging to Pizzeria Mozza at the corner of Highland Avenue and Melrose Ave. in Los Angeles was released.

Before we begin, it might be important to get an understanding of the camera design,  positioning, and any implications.

The Security Camera Array

Mozza Melrose Security Camera-looks east

Mozza Melrose Security Camera-looks east

Let’s begin by examining the configuration of the security cameras, what they look like and where they are positioned.

In total, there are three…one high up the exterior wall of the front which faces east looking down Melrose Ave.  Pictured to the left, it is just above the tree and just below the brown awning.

As you can see, this type of camera is well protected from wind and is securely affixed to the exterior.

Pizzeria Mozza

Pizzeria Mozza

The next camera is positioned lower than the first and below an awning over the main entrance of the restaurant.   Please note that the awning is scalloped.  The camera here  is identical to the camera above.

This is the position from which the recorded footage currently available on You Tube and Vimeo was recorded.  Quite honestly, the third camera is in the best position to film the accident and it would be reasonable to suspect that there is footage from this third camera that we will never see.

Best view straight down Highland

Best view straight down Highland

The third camera is high up on the south wall of the restaurant and overlooks the alley.  It is pointed south and provides the best view of Highland south.  It would also have remained in focus up to the impact point on the median and would have yielded clearer pictures.

Therefore,  (she wrote with some sarcasm),  the inferior view from camera 2 over the entrance is the one released to the public.

The video was uploaded first to Vimeo and then to YouTube.   I want to thank reader De Grijze for making me aware of its release.

We begin here.  At approximately 14 seconds into the video, the car’s headlights begin to light up the street.  Suddenly, the car comes streaking into view.

Yes, that does look like a missile running parallel with the car, but if it were,  it would just keep on sailing down Highland until it blew up Wilshire Blvd.  Since that did not happen, nor does this anomaly show up anywhere else in the video, it is likely that it is an artifact created by the camera as it adjusts focus.   We will come back around to this later.  While this is not a missile, it is something of interest that bears further exploration…probably in the next article.

First Glimpse of Car

First Glimpse of Car

Here follows a freeze frame of the point where the car breeches the median.  The left rear of  the vehicle is slightly higher than the right.  Remember that the curb around the median is only 3 ” in height.

This should dispel the notion that Hastings swerved off the street into the palm tree at some extraordinary rate of speed.   It did not happen that way, nor could it have happened that way.  The palm tree in question is 79″  in circumference.  This means that there is a three and a half foot wall of palm tree at any angle and no engine/transmission could come flying out without embedding itself into that tree.

This spot on the median is slightly before the double palms which are two palms in close proximity to one another.   These palms are roughly 25 feet north of the water pipe area.  The car is not near the strike palm.  Having come up on the median here, the car would need to travel parallel with the median curb until it clears both palms.  At that point, it can fully (and safely) mount the median.

Hastings car breeches median

Hastings car breeches median

The darkness on the median is very difficult to deal with, however the point where the car climbed the 3″ curb is parallel to the double palms that are approximately 20 feet north of the water pipe.  For those who have not read the articles leading up to this one, that pipe is PVC, not metal.  Many have speculated that the car ran over the pipe which must have then nicked a fuel line.  The car was a sports car….the front end of this model is relatively close to the ground. Additionally, the undercarriage of the Mercedes is plated (see “Death by Mercedes” for a diagram).

The pipe was surrounded by a cage.  The cage, according to local residents, was found near the engine/transmission at the corner of Clinton.  It was definitely hit, but not run over.

Security cage had been around the water pipe

The PVC pipe was located deep in the front yard of a resident on the north bound side of Highland.  Deep gashing damage to a tree shows that it traveled at a very high speed.

In this next photo, the car is now fully on the median:

Suddenly, the lights on the car go out:

Next, a peculiar light begins to emerge.  It looks like smoke or fog and seems to flow over a vague vehicle shape.  This strange light oozes between the double palms to the left.

Mozza-SW corner of Highland and Melrose

Mozza-SW corner of Highland and Melrose

But Wait, There’s More!

On the south west corner of Melrose and Highland, there is a pizza place, Mozza, and Mozza has a security camera.  A  local resident whom I had interviewed had told me that the Mozza security tape had been turned over to police.  Nothing more was said of it.

However, a few days ago Michael Krikorian, former LA Times crime reporter and the boyfriend of the woman who owns Pizzeria Mozza, gave a statement to David J. Krajicek.  Apparently, he was able to view the tape before it was given to the police.  He arrived at the restaurant just four and a half hours after the Hastings crash.  Here is what he had to say:

“Shortly before 9 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, I was walking with my girlfriend, Nancy Silverton, to get my car, which I had left the night before at her restaurant, Pizzeria Mozza, at Highland and Melrose avenues. Walking west on Melrose, we noticed crime scene tape as we arrived at Highland. Just to the south, a wrecked and charred car was being pulled away from a palm tree in the median.

We lifted the yellow tape and walked down the sidewalk to get access to the alley leading to the lot where my car was parked. A Los Angeles police officer stopped us. Nancy explained she owned the restaurant and I identified myself as a reporter. The officer let us walk on and gave a quick rundown: A man had driven into the tree at 4:30 that morning. He was dead.

My first thought was that another early morning L.A. drunk had killed himself. I told the officer that a security camera located outside the front door of the pizzeria probably captured the crash.

As we talked to the police, a Mozza employee named Gary, who has been staying at a small apartment above the restaurant, approached us to say that he had heard the crash.

“I heard a ‘whoosh,’ then what sounded like a bump and then an explosion,” he said. “I thought the building had been hit.”

He said he rushed down and saw the car ablaze. Gary listened as two men who claimed to have witnessed the crash told police the car had sped through a red light at Melrose.  (He may be referring to Jose here.)

Later, when the pizzeria manager arrived at work, we watched the security camera footage.  There’s no wonder it was a fatality. The crash ended with a hellish explosion and fire. The officer, watching the video with us, was as stunned as we were. He said, “I have never seen a car explode like that.”

Soon, a flatbed truck with the burned Mercedes CL 250 aboard drove slowly by, going north in the southbound lanes of Highland. The front of the car, particularly on the driver’s side, was badly damaged. I snapped a couple of poor photos with my iPhone.”

“The camera shows the view from near the entrance of Pizzeria Mozza.

Four seconds into the start of the tape, a minivan or SUV goes by the front of restaurant. Three seconds later, another vehicle goes by, traveling from the restaurant front door to the crash site in about seven seconds. At 35 seconds into the tape, a car is seen driving northbound and appears to slow, probably for the light at Melrose.

Then at 79 seconds, the camera catches a very brief flash of light in the reflection of the glass of the pizzeria. Traveling at least twice as fast as the other cars on the tape, Hastings’s Mercedes C250 coupe suddenly whizzes by. (This is probably the “whoosh” that Gary, the Mozza employee, heard.)

The car swerves and then explodes in a brilliant flash as it hits a palm tree in the median. Viewed at normal speed, it is a shocking scene—reminiscent of fireballs from “Shock and Awe” images from Baghdad in 2003.

I have heard and read a wide range of guessed speeds, up to as much as 130 mph. I think it’s safe to say the car was doing at least 80.

Driving 80 on Highland is flying. Over 100 is absolute recklessness.

Highland has a very slight rise and fall at its intersection with Melrose. It’s difficult to tell by the film, but based on tire marks—which were not brake skid marks, by the way—chalked by the traffic investigators, it seems that the Mercedes may have been airborne briefly as it crossed the intersection, then landed hard. Tire marks were left about 10 feet east of the restaurant’s valet stand.”

“About 100 feet after the car zooms by on the tape, it starts to swerve. At about 195 feet from the camera, the car jumps the curb of the center median, heading toward a palm tree 56 feet away.

About halfway between the curb and the tree, the car hits a metal protrusion—perhaps 30 inches tall and 2 feet wide—that gives access to city water mains below. This is where the first small flash occurs. This pipe may have damaged the undercarriage of the car, perhaps rupturing a fuel line.”

The “car caught fire from a ruptured fuel line due to running over something” (such as the water pipe) is a popular theory.  The mangled security cage pictured here was blown to the same area as the transmission.  So was the plastic pipe.   They both traveled approximately 200 feet and across the street to the left.  Additionally, according to the witness Jose, there was fire and sparking coming from the rear undercarriage well north of Melrose.

Security cage had been around the water pipe
Security cage had been around the water pipe

(It has recently come to light that the plastic pipe was surrounded by a cage like structure pictured to the right.  This information was provided by another late reporting witness, the watering man’s wife.  We will get to her next.  Some of what she had to  say is absolutely shocking.)

Michael continues:

I looked at the tape frame by frame. A second flash immediately follows the first. It might be the brake lights, but it’s hard to tell. The next frame is dark. Then comes the first explosion, followed immediately by a large fireball.”

 Wife of watering man speaks

Resident Attempting to Douse Flames

Resident Attempting to Douse Flames

This man and his wife live in the house directly across the street from the palm tree that Michael Hastings slammed in to on Highland Avenue.  His wife declined to give a statement on camera to Loud Lab News but she recently granted a telephone interview to a reporter with Info Wars.

She told the reporter, GiGi Erneta, that her bedroom window is on the second floor directly across the street from the palm tree.  The bed is directly under the window.  She and her husband were startled awake by a loud boom followed by a huge flash of light that lit the bedroom up “like daylight”.  Her house did not shake from the best of her recollection.  She moved the curtain to see the massive fire, a fire so intense that she did not see the car at that moment.

Her husband grabbed his slippers to run outside while yelling at her to call 911.  She joined him outside and remained outside until the coroner arrived at 7:30am.   There were two women from the Coroner office, an Oriental and a Latina.  One came in a coroner van, the other in a car marked “coroner investigation”.   Both were of very slight build and she wondered to herself how they were going to perform their tasks.

By that time, a second group from the fire department had arrived on scene. They brought special equipment including the “jaws of life” and chains.  The firemen used their electric tools to cut parts away from the car.  She witnessed them cutting in the rear of the vehicle and they cut away the driver side door panel. Then they attached chains to the tree, the front of the car, and the rear.  Then they used a fire truck to pull the car straight so that they could access the remains.  She likened it to pulling on an accordion.   Two firemen removed the body and the coroners took over.

Police had been on scene the entire time, taking photographs and measurements.  At no time during the three hours that the remains stayed in place was the car left unsupervised.  (I found it interesting that she threw this detail in even though the reporter hadn’t asked about that at all.)

Now comes the big surprise.  But first, look carefully at the photo below.   Take note of the extent of the fire damage inside this car.  Go back up to the photo of her husband trying to douse the flames with their garden hose.  We can plainly observe a “white hot” fire.

Witness Claims Body Not Charred...HUH???

Witness Claims Body Not Charred…HUH???

Here are the temperature ranges for fire:

(source:  http://maggiemaggio.com/color/2011/08/fire-ii-color-and-temperature/

  • White
    • Whitish: 1,300 °C (2,400 °F)
    • Bright: 1,400 °C (2,600 °F)
    • Dazzling: 1,500 °C (2,700 °F)
The fire looked pretty bright and most of the time, entirely white, so let’s estimate 2600 degrees F.  As a point of reference, crematoriums perform cremations of human remains at around 1100 degrees F.   Now here is what watering man’s wife said about the remains.
The police had chased her back into her house and then off of her balcony but she managed to see everything from a window.  Even the white sheet draped over the vehicle did not interfere with her view.  She said that she expected to see a body in pieces and completely blackened.  Instead, she reports, the head was blackened down to the shoulders.  The rest of the body was not burned. She was surprised that someone living in California could have such white arms.   She was able to estimate his age as being between twenty five to thirty years old.  He was wearing a short sleeve tee shirt.  They placed him on a white sheet on the ground flat on his back.  One of the coroners pulled the body by the arm to roll him on his side so that they could access his back pockets, presumably in search of a wallet for I.D.
Here is the interview with the wife of the resident spraying water on the wreckage:
The Los Angeles Times reported on June 19th that :

“Los Angeles County coroner’s office had yet to determine Wednesday whether a body recovered from a fiery car crash was that of Hastings.

The body was “unrecognizable” and badly charred, police told the Los Angeles Times. The body is identified only as “John Doe 117.”

Coroner’s officials were attempting to match dental records to help make a positive identification, according to authorities. No autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday.”

(source:  http://articles.latimes.com/2013/jun/19/local/la-me-ln-michael-hastings-crash-20130619)

The witness that I had interviewed told me that the remains were skeletized. We can see that the interior of that car is burned to a crisp and we know that white flame is over 2000 degrees F.   We also know that rigor mortis sets in between three and four hours, yet the wife  of watering man describes a pliable corpse that was rotated by pulling on one arm, charring only from the head down to the shoulders, and clothing that did not burn away.

We now also know that the remains, in whatever state, were cremated without permission from Hasting’s family.   But this was just a typical, ordinary little car crash…
